- The project
will include a renovation to the existing district kitchen, which
is located in the high school building. Although the kitchen initally
served only the high school, for many years it has been used to
prepare breakfast and lunch for all USD 343 schools, students
and staff. The renovation will provide a more adequate space to
serve the students of the district.
- The high
school was initially constructed without a weight room. Over the
years, a quality weight training facility has become a necessity
for high school programs. Although the school converted space
for use as a weight room, it has been undersized and inadequate
for the number of students who use the facility. The proposal
provides for a new weight room adjacent to the locker rooms in
the gymnasium addition. The existing weight room will revert to
much needed storage.
- A new entrance
for high school students will be located on the south side of
the building. To make this possible, it will be necessary to relocate
a computer room. The new computer room will use the space formerly
occupied as a girls locker room. Although the space was too small
to serve adequately as the primary girls locker room, it will
provide space for a larger, modern computer facility.
- At the time
PLHS was constructed, athletic competition for girls was not widespread.
For that reason, the existing girls locker room, designed and
built in the late 60's is very small. The project will replace
the small girls locker room with a locker room equal in size to
the boys locker room. The new addition will also contain two additional
locker rooms to be used for middle school students, as well as
for visiting athletic teams.
- A passageway
will be provided between the existing high school and the new
middle school at a location that is presently the west end of
the high school band room. As a result, instrument storage space
must be provided in the addition.
